What Are My Treatment Options?

Before beginning any treatment, Dr. Kelley will meet with you to perform a thorough orthodontic evaluation. He will review your teeth and gums, your bite, X-rays, and digital images in order to map out the best course of treatment to meet your needs. He may recommend:

A traditional orthodontic treatment, braces consist of metal brackets and wires that are adhered to the teeth to shift them into their correct position. Metal braces can also be used for adjusting an incorrect bite, such as an overbite, crossbite, or underbite. Dr. Kelley will determine the length of time braces should be worn, which generally is one to two years. Braces are typically applied for pre-teens or teens. Good oral hygiene habits are imperative with braces as they are susceptible to trapping food and causing decay.

Invisalign® is a revolutionary method of straightening the teeth with clear, plastic trays as opposed to brackets and wires. The aligners, which are removable, are customized specifically for your mouth. Each tray will be worn for six to eight weeks before it is traded out for the next tray in the series, gradually shifting the teeth into their correct position. Invisalign® offers the same excellent results as traditional metal braces; however, the aligners are more comfortable, easier to keep clean, and virtually undetectable to others.

  • Less chance of chipping or breaking the teeth

Am I a Candidate for Teeth Straightening Treatment?

The best way to learn whether you are a candidate for orthodontic treatment is to meet with Dr. Kelley for a consultation. Dr. Kelley recommends patients come in for an orthodontic evaluation as early as seven years old. Virtually anyone is a candidate for braces; however, orthodontic treatment is typically administered for pre-teens and teenagers whose teeth are fully developed, to correct:

  • Crooked, twisted, or overlapping teeth
  • Widely spaced or over-crowded teeth
  • Overbite, crossbite, underbite
  • Teeth that are protruding

Invisalign® is the most popular choice for either teenagers or adults in their 20s and 30s who prefer to not wear highly obvious metal braces. There is no age limit for treatment, as patients are never too old to improve their smiles.
