Same-Day Dental Crowns Provide Superior Strength and Durability

Dental crowns can treat teeth that are chipped, cracked, misshapen, or otherwise damaged. At our Troy, MI, practice, we proudly offer all-porcelain crowns that are virtually as lifelike as your natural teeth. Furthermore, Keith W. Kelley, D.D.S., uses state-of-the-art CEREC® imaging to create crowns in a single day. Using digital impressions of your tooth, this system can produce a crown that fits securely and precisely matches to the shade of your smile. Plus, CEREC uses the most advanced materials available, providing a beautifully realistic sparkle. Thus, when you receive treatment from Dr. Kelley, you could enjoy both a renewed appearance and a complete restoration of your dental function.

Are You a Candidate for a Dental Crown?

Crowns can repair moderate to severe dental damage. A crown can be an effective solution if you are sturggling with:

  • A cracked tooth, provided that the crack does not extend all the way to the dental root
  • A tooth with severe decay that is too extensive for a filling
  • A worn tooth
  • A tooth with severe staining, particularly if it is internal
  • A tooth with dramatic erosion that affects your appearance or the overall force of your bite
  • A misshapen or unusually small tooth

A crown can also top a dental implant to replace a missing tooth. A crown can also be if you have an infected tooth. Dr. Kelley can place a crown at the end of root canal therapy, sealing your tooth and restoring your healthy bite.

Designing and Placing Dental Crowns

Before he can place a crown, Dr. Kelley will reshape your tooth and remove any decayed tissue. This step will make room for the restoration and, at the same time, prevent the damage from worsening. To place a traditional crown, manual impressions of your tooth are taken, and in approximately two weeks, you can come in to receive your restoration. However, with the advent of CEREC technology, the treatment timeline can be significantly shortened, and your entire treatment can take place in just one office visit. Using a digital scanner, a member of our team can take virtual impressions of your tooth, which will be even more precise than a traditional mold. Then the CEREC machine will carve your crown out of solid porcelain or zirconia. It will take less than an hour for the milling machine to produce your crown. When it is finished, Dr. Kelley will use composite resin to affix the restoration to your tooth.

A CEREC milling machine can craft your restoration in approximately one hour, allowing you to leave our office with fully restored dental function.

The Benefits of Porcelain Dental Crowns

Dental crowns can be made from many different materials. In the past, metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal were the most popular options. Although these substances are still in use, Dr. Kelley uses all-porcelain for several aesthetic and functional reasons:

  • With a wide range of colors to choose from, your dentist can find a shade that harmonizes beautifully with your teeth.
  • Porcelain and zirconia offer a natural translucence and sparkle. Thus, porcelain crowns are an especially good choice for your front teeth.
Dr. Kelley is committed to personalized care, patient safety, and comfortable treatment.
  • Porcelain requires less alteration of your teeth, so Dr. Kelley can remove smaller amounts of dental tissue.
  • This lifelike material will also form a stronger bond with your tooth, ensuring long-term treatment success.
